On March 10th, we met again to explore the joys of Sicily at a warm, authentic neighbourhood restaurant, Zucca, where Blair Aspinall and Andrew Milne-Allan had prepared a feast for us under the leadership of Sally Doulis. Some of the wines were presented by Lifford Wine & Spirits and were finely described by Igal Amsallem, sommelier.

Sally’s husband Alex offered to share his passion for the region’s history, explaining the many influences over the centuries from the Greeks in 500 B.C., which added considerable colour to the evening, and a better understanding of its wine history as well.

Una Serata Siciliana began with cazzili and caciocavallo (potato croquettes) with a glass of the aromatic 2012 Lighea, Terre Siciliane IGP, Donnafugata, which presented with notes of citrus, orange blossom, rose and herbs. It is 100% Zibibbo (Muscat of Alexandria).

The macco di fave (fava bean purée, fried squash agrodolce, house-made ricotta salata) was accompanied by the 2010 Fondo Filara, Egna Rosso DOC, Nicosia, with its pleasant balsamic finish.

The polpo alla griglia, insalatini di cedri, a salad of grilled octopus and citron lemon salad, a highly unusual dish for most of us, was a beautiful match with the 2012 Anthilia, Sicilia IGP, Donnafugata (flowery fragrances, mineral background, white peaches). Chef Milne told us that if we knew where to look, and in season, we could find these unique lemons in Toronto.

The ravioi di cernia, crema di asparagi e pinoli (grouper ravioli with capers and ricotta, asparagus purée and pine nuts), was served with the 2012 SP68 Bianco, Terre Siciliane IGT, Occhipinti, a rich and flavourful white, capably presented and the SP 68 Bianco was imported by Sharlene Greechan of Savour wines. *protected email*

The bistecca agghiotta, fascatula di ceci (Sicilian-style steak, vegetable sauce with olives, red peppers, cherry tomatoes, chick pea polenta) and the cheese course came with the powerful 2009 Catagho, Sicilia IGT, Mandrarossa.

Even non-dessert wine drinkers were intrigued with the final offering of the evening: the legendary bright amber-coloured 2008 Ben Ryé, Passito di Pantelleria DOC, Donnafugata, 100% Zibibbo (Muscat of Alexandria) made from naturally dried grapes. The dried fig, honey, herb and mineral notes provided complex and felicitous companionship for the semifreddo di zabaione, arance sanguigne caramellate. This zabaione cream, with sliced blood oranges and sauce of their caramelised peel and juice, was the ultimate Sicilian flourish to a sensuous and eye-opening evening.

Zucca has now officially convinced a number of people that it is well worth making a special trip to this charming little neighbourhood restaurant!

Our Hosts were Blair Aspinall and Chef Andrew Milne-Allan.  Quite simply amazing attention to detail.  The pictorial slide show gives you an idea of this amazing IWFS event put together by Sally Doulis.  Thank you Sally!!
