Open Letter to Members from your BGA
Dear Friends,
Where would you like to spend five days in the Americas for the 2012 IW&FS BGA Festival? The Organizing Committee from the Cape Town, South Africa branch, among our brethren in the Europe/Africa Committee Area, staged a superb IW&FS 2009 International Festival in Cape Town, just concluded last month. The Festivals & Events Committee for the Board of Governors of the Americas (BGA) now has the unenviable task of planning a festival which approaches that level of excellence at the BGA's next scheduled international rotation in 2012.
Our first task will be to decide on a location, and I’d like your help. In the fall of '04, in advance of selecting Santa Barbara, California, as the location for the BGA's 2007 Regional Festival, we
e-surveyed a broad range of IW&FS members around the world to arrive at a collection of good suggestions. We're trying that approach again.
Would you kindly comment briefly (perceived pros & cons) on a few possible location ideas, all within the Americas, and put forth any other destinations we might want to consider? Please keep in mind that in the past ten or so years, the BGA has had festivals in Napa, California; San Juan, Puerto Rico; Santiago, Chile; Portland, Oregon and Santa Barbara, California.
Note that there are some valuable prerequisites for a good festival location. First, it has to excite the imagination; we need people to want to sign on. Secondly, there should be well-established infrastructure (hotels, restaurants, activity destinations) available for our group. Thirdly, it’s nice to be in or near a wine-producing region, if possible. And any urban selection, away from wine country, needs a large collection of top restaurants and the availability of top wines. I’m certain the very experienced among you will describe other important requirements, as well.
I’ve listed below those places where there has been more than just some incidental interest so far. And we may choose a destination not on this early list.
-Buenos Aires & the Mendoza wine country in Argentina
-New Orleans, Louisiana
-Hudson River Valley & CIA in New York
-Washington, D.C. & Virginia wine country
-Montreal, Quebec
-Vancouver/Victoria, British Columbia
-Okanagan Valley, British Columbia
As you may have read in the current issue of Wine, Food & Friends, the BGA's recent 4-day Caribbean cruise in January went swimmingly (sorry). The BGA Festivals & Events Committee is delighted with the response from our attendees who returned with glowing reports, and we are investigating similar ideas for the near future.
Please forward this e-survey request to your fellow Branch members and let me know your thoughts by emailing me at davefelton@earthlink.net.
Thanks.

The European/African Committee (EAC) of The IW&FS has asked me to forward the attached announcement to all branches in the Americas. It announces an exciting Merseyside & North Wales Festival based in Liverpool to be followed by an optional tour of the Lake Country in June 2011.
Should any of your members be interested in attending, they should contact Ron Barker, Chair of the EAC, as directed in the announcement. Please forward this to your members ASAP so they will have every opportunity to attend what will be a fun and interesting festival with IW&FS members from around the world.
