THE 2012 INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE OF THE INTERNATIONAL WINE & FOOD SOCIETY is scheduled for September 11—16 in Vancouver BC. We are looking forward to welcoming visitors from around the world.
Open Letter to Members from your BGA
Dear Friends,
The planning for the International Wine & Food Society's 2012 International Festival in Vancouver, British Columbia, has been ongoing since this gorgeous Western Canada destination was selected in the Fall of 2009. The Festival Organizing Committee (FOC) contracted last summer with Vancouver's beautiful new Fairmont Pacific Rim Hotel to serve as our headquarters, and we've been putting the actual pieces of a wonderful festival puzzle together ever since. The dates are set: Arrival at the hotel on the afternoon of Tuesday, 11 September 2012, to be followed there by an Opening Reception and Dinner. Four full days of superb meals, accompanied by the best wines of both the region and the world, along with special activities celebrating the diversity of this grand city, will take place in various locales in and around Vancouver during the following week. We will conclude with a Gala Black-tie Dinner on Saturday evening, 15 September, back at the hotel. We also are planning to offer an optional "turn-key" pre-festival cruise to Alaska and a number of optional post-festival land trips. (You already can "see" festival articles, including the series titled Vancouver Vignettes, and other relevant information on the Society's new website, www.iwfs.org.)
We expect to open registration for 200 attendees later this calendar quarter, with a timing goal of early June 2011. Registration will be made through the IW&FS website, and payment by credit card will be handled through the site's Registration link. We hope to formally alert our worldwide membership to the opening of Registration via a combined announcement through: 1) email, 2) the website and 3) the BGA's quarterly newsletter. At that time, the FOC will fill in some of the blanks for you, listing a number of the expected highlights of the festival and, most importantly, the cost to join the party. As this is a once-every-third-year "international" festival, the FOC will use the latest membership numbers from our three geographic regions to fairly allocate attendance - using the ratio of 69 percent for the BGA, 21 percent for the EAC and 10 percent for the APZ. Should interest be strong in one region and spots fill up quickly, a Wait List will be established using a website "time-stamp" of your registration effort. If other regions don't fill their allocations completely, we will begin to move names off the other regional Wait List(s) after an appropriate period.
This email represents ONLY an indication of interest. With your reply, the FOC will retain your name and email address to be certain that you receive the initial communication announcing the timing of the official Registration Date on the website. A “Reply All”, which will go to me and the BGA's Executive Director, Christy Marsh, does not obligate you in any manner. We simply are hopeful of learning how extensive the interest might be in this upcoming event in advance of the actual Registration. I'll share the results with those who respond.
The FOC has collected as many of our worldwide member email addresses as possible. Yet, e-addresses constantly change and we may not have everyone's. If you are a Branch leader, please forward this email to your own branch member distribution list. We'd rather there be duplication of this message than have any of our worldwide members miss an opportunity to participate.
In the meantime, feel free to email Christy or me with any questions. Although I'll be traveling over the balance of the month, I'll attempt to respond with some modicum of timeliness.
I and the other members of your hard-working Festival Organizing Committee very much look forward to welcoming you to another beautiful IW&FS festival destination in the Fall of 2012. Our Society is special in many ways, but I must admit a personal fondness for these large, festive gatherings.
You have my warmest regards,
Dave
